WHMCS was built around a US/EU-centric view of how hosting clients pay: cards and bank transfers first, with everything else — including the mobile money rails that most Kenyan and wider African hosting clients actually prefer — treated as a third-party gateway module to be integrated later, and paid for separately. For a hosting provider whose client base pays predominantly by M-Pesa, that's not a minor inconvenience; it's the platform actively working against how the business runs day to day.
Kenya now has a genuine replacement: a webhosting billing system engineered and operated from Nairobi, built around African payment behaviour from the first line of code rather than retrofitted onto a platform designed for a different market. M-Pesa, Airtel Money and card payments reconcile natively into the same ledger, provisioning and suspension logic account for how local hosting businesses actually collect payment, and the client portal doesn't assume a card is the default option.
This is the platform behind Imara Cloud, and it's the same engineering I bring to client engagements across Kenya and the wider region — a custom webhosting billing system that doesn't just translate WHMCS's assumptions into a local currency, but rebuilds the payment and automation core around how African hosting providers and their clients actually transact. For hosts tired of paying for gateway modules to bolt mobile money onto a platform that wasn't built for it, that's the whole point.
