One Wallet for KES, UGX and TZS: The Zuma Finance Story

The Mobile Money Paradox

East Africa leads the world in mobile money adoption. M-Pesa has more active users in Kenya than the entire population of New Zealand. And yet, if you want to send money from your Kenyan M-Pesa to an Ugandan MTN MoMo user, you'll pay 5–8% in fees and wait 30 minutes for it to arrive. Cross-border commerce is hampered by payment fragmentation that didn't exist a decade ago in cash economies.

How the Zuma Wallet Works

The Zuma Wallet is a regulated stored-value account that holds balances in KES, UGX, and TZS simultaneously. When you top it up from M-Pesa, your KES balance increases. When you pay a Ugandan vendor, the system debits your KES balance and credits the vendor's UGX balance at a rate checked against Oanda every 15 minutes. The vendor sees UGX. You see KES. The conversion is transparent, the rate is shown before you confirm, and we charge a flat 1.5% conversion fee — far below the 5–8% charged by traditional mobile money cross-border services.

Escrow: The Trust Infrastructure

When you hire a freelancer on Zuma, your payment doesn't go to them immediately. It goes into an escrow sub-wallet — a ring-fenced balance that is held until you confirm the work is done. The freelancer can see the funds are there (giving them confidence to start work) but cannot access them until delivery is confirmed. This eliminates the #1 complaint in the East African freelance market: non-payment after work is done.

The same escrow system works for property deposits, e-commerce orders above KES 10,000, and real estate agent fees.

AI-Backed Credit Scoring

Your Zuma Credit Score is computed from four inputs: your transaction history on Zuma (frequency, amounts, consistency), your repayment history on any previous Zuma loans, your in-app activity score (account age, KYC level, service usage), and behavioral signals (how quickly you respond to messages, whether you cancel orders). The score runs from 0–900 and is refreshed every 7 days. A score above 600 unlocks instant loans of up to KES 50,000. Above 750 unlocks Buy Now Pay Later on all 15 Zuma services.
